Identity âś Respect âś Inclusion âś Sovereignty
A shared understanding for a world worth belonging to.
The IRIS Concord affirms four pillarsâIdentity, Respect, Inclusion, and Sovereigntyâas essential foundations for a healthy and equitable human community. It encourages us to act with integrity, recognize the individuality of others, and safeguard the freedoms that support everyoneâs well-being.
It offers a practical and ethical agreement for living with purpose and connection while remaining fully engaged in the world around us.
đŞ Identity
Identity begins with the right to exist as oneselfâwithout the pressure to conform or diminish. It is the freedom to name oneself, to express oneâs values and culture openly or quietly, and to be recognized as a unique presence in the human story. This aligns with Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which affirms that all people are âborn free and equal in dignity and rights.â
đ¤ Respect
Respect serves as the bridge that connects people across differences. It involves listening, creating space for other voices, and standing in solidarity when needed. Respect is a central human needâvisible in public movements, in moments of quiet isolation, and in the universal pursuit of justice. It creates the space where Identity and Inclusion meet. It reflects the United Nations Global Compact principle to ârespect the dignity and equality of all human beings.â
đ Inclusion
Inclusion is the recognition that the human story has always been diverse. It does not âaddâ people to the table; it acknowledges that they have always been part of it. Inclusion ensures that every individual has a place to contribute and to thrive, without erasure or tokenism. The UN Declaration on the Rights of Minorities protects cultural identity, participation, and expression.
đ Sovereignty
Sovereignty is the foundation of personal agency. It is the right to define oneâs own boundaries, to give or withhold consent, and to make choices without coercion. True sovereignty begins within and is strengthened by a community that honors it. This is central to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the global principle of self-determination.
âś The Core Ethos
The four pillars of the IRIS ConcordâIdentity, Respect, Inclusion, and Sovereigntyâare interdependent. Each one strengthens the others, creating a balanced framework for ethical interaction and community life. All four pillars emphasize that human rights are âuniversal, inalienable, indivisible, interdependent, and interrelated,â as described in the UNFPA Human Rights Principles.
The accompanying essays explore each pillar in depth, offering perspectives on how these values can be lived and applied in everyday situations.
